Learn to read avalanche terrain, use your rescue gear, and make better decisions in the backcountry — right here at Mt Olympus.

The ASC1 (Avalanche Skills Course 1) is the standard entry-level avalanche course for anyone heading beyond the ski area boundary — skiers, snowboarders, and climbers. No previous avalanche training required.

Course details

  • Dates: Group1 (28th and 29th July 2026) Suggested arrival 27th July
  • Dates : Group 2 (30th -31st 2026 Suggested arrival 29th of July 
  • Time: 9am to 4pm daily
  • Location: Mt Olympus ski field, Windwhistle
  • Cost: per person as per invoice (invoiced on registration)
  • Instructor: Connor Glynn (2026)
  • Group size: Ratio 1:6 to gain ASC1 MSC accreditation

What you'll cover

  • Recognising avalanche terrain and how avalanches happen
  • Reading and using the avalanche advisory in trip planning
  • Snowpack observations in the field
  • Transceiver, shovel and probe use — companion rescue practice
  • Group decision-making and travel techniques in the backcountry

What to bring

  • Skis, snowboard, splitboard suitable for off-piste travel
  • Transceiver, shovel and probe (hire available — tell us on the registration form)
  • Warm alpine clothing, gloves, goggles, sunscreen
  • Lunch, snacks and a drink bottle for the field days
  • A notebook and pencil

Staying on the hill

INCLUDED for 2026 on hill prior to start and 2 nights accommodation.

On-hill accommodation is available for course participants — a great option so you're on snow first thing. Note the registration form asks which nights you'd like.  (add Checkfront booking link or instructions here if you want bookings made directly).

Getting here

The Mt Olympus access road requires a suitable 4WD vehicle and chains must be carried. If you need help arranging a lift up the road, let us know on the registration form and we'll do our best to pair people up.
