What is MOFO?

The Mt Olympus Freeride Open is a competitive freeride ski and snowboard event held on steep, ungroomed, natural alpine terrain. Competitors choose and ride their own lines — cliffs, chutes, drops and natural features — and are judged on their run. It’s one of the highlights of the Mt Olympus season, and a grassroots event that welcomes first-timers alongside returning competitors.

Key dates

  • Weather window: 14–16 September 2026. The competition day is confirmed within the window.
  • Registrations: open now, and remain open until the event commences unless entry numbers require an earlier close.
  • Rider briefing, inspection, competition day and prizegiving: to be confirmed closer to the event.

A separate event, the NZ Junior Freeride Tour (NZJFT), runs 11–13 September. MOFO and NZJFT are different events.

Eligibility & categories

Open to competitors aged 16 and over. Competitors under 18 need a parent or guardian to complete the consent section of the registration form.

Ski and Snowboard, each with:

  • Male Open · Female Open
  • Male Masters (35+) · Female Masters (35+)

Entry fees

Entry includes a lift ticket for the day of competition.

Compulsory safety equipment

All competitors must wear an approved helmet and back protector while competing. Each competitor must also carry appropriate avalanche safety equipment, including a functioning avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.

Transceivers must be worn correctly, switched on and pass the event equipment check. Competitors who do not have the required equipment, or whose equipment does not pass inspection, will not be cleared to start.

How to enter

  1. Read this page.
  2. Complete the MOFO registration form.
  3. Pay the correct entry fee (member or non-member).
  4. Book accommodation separately if you need it.
  5. Watch your email for event updates and the weather call.

Your entry is not confirmed until both the registration form and payment have been received.

Accommodation

Booked separately — it is not included in your entry. Options: Mt Olympus Top Hut, Bottom Hut, or off-mountain. Use the code SENDIT30 when booking for discounted Top Hut accommodation rates for competitors and support crew, valid from Sunday night 13 September through to Friday 18 September — so you can stay on and keep skiing after the comp.

On-hill accommodation is R18 during the competition days. All ages are welcome for the nights after the comp. Under-18 competitors should contact the organisers about accommodation arrangements before booking.

What you’re agreeing to

All competitors accept the MOFO 2026 Acknowledgement of Risk & Participant Declaration as part of registration. MOFO is a high-consequence event on serious terrain in a remote alpine location, where rescue and evacuation can be delayed. You’ll confirm you’re an advanced rider, fit to compete, wearing the compulsory safety equipment, and that you’ll attend the compulsory briefing and inspection and follow all patrol and official directions.

What to bring

Approved helmet and back protector (compulsory), avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe (compulsory), suitable skis or snowboard, appropriate alpine clothing, personal medications, ID, and proof of payment if requested.

Event updates

Conditions change fast. Once entered, monitor your email, the Mt Olympus website and official social channels, and listen at the rider briefing.

Refunds & cancellation

  • Entries may be transferred only with the organisers’ approval.
  • Withdraw before the event: refund less an administration fee, per the club’s booking policy.
  • If the event is postponed within the weather window, your entry moves to the revised day automatically.
  • If no competition is held during the weather window (weather or a club operational decision), you receive a full refund.

  • Entries do not automatically transfer to next year.
